Singapore Red Light District - Keong Saik Road

The Place: Keong Saik Road
Keong Saik Road has been one of the best-known red light districts in Singapore since the 1960s. The area was filled with vice activities during the 1960s and was notorious for its brothels. These days, it is a complete different landscape. Most of the brothels has been replaced with chic boutique hotels, offices, bars and restaurants. Just a few years back, there were still at least 6-8 brothels. As of the writing of this post, there are only 2 left.

The street also has some well-known eateries. Be sure to grab a bite if you are around the area. The roasted duck noodles from Foong Kee Coffeeshop is simply mouth watering. The store is also famous for its roasted meat.

Getting There
Keong Saik Road is a one way street leading to Neil Road. Few years ago, the brothels used be distributed along the 2 rows of shophouses along Keong Saik Road. As of now, the only 2 remaining brothels are located just beside the renowned Foong Kee Coffeeshop (House 8 and 6A/B).

If you are traveling by Taxi, just tell the driver to go to Keong Saik Road or guide him to stop at Foong Kee Coffeeshop. The coffeeshop is located on the left row of shophouses towards the end of the one-way Keong Saik Road. If you are travelling by car, bus or train, you may use Google Maps (Directions) and type in your location and your destination 'Keong Saik Road' and it will provide you with the routes to get there by car, train, taxi. (eg: type the following: Lorong 3 Toa Payoh to Keong Saik Road).

For drivers, coupon road side parking is available on the sides but is mostly full during weekday office hours. Be sure to display your coupon as the parking attendants around this area is pretty on the ball.

For travelers by train, the nearest train station will be Outram Park. It is an acceptable walking distance of less than a km.

The Ladies
The brothels located here are still operating the same way as the 60s, which will actually be quite a nostalgic experience for the older customers. There are no fishtank (Geylang) nor back alley (Petain Road and Desker Road). The brothel is generally frequented by older and long-timed customers who know exactly who they want.

Upon going up the stairs to the second storey, the customer will be greeted by the operator or if he is lucky, the ladies themselves. The customer will normally inform the operator which lady he would like or ask for a lady by the price range (i.e. 30, 50, 70). He will then be offered a cold towel by the operator or the lady. Most of the ladies here have been around for quite some time, thus, are more to the matured or MILF category (late 30s to 50s). Most of them have also moved their trade to Petain Road. The operator will inform the lady if she is in another house and she will walk over. Thus, there is no difference between the two houses. Prices range from $30 up to $120. Most of the ladies charge $30 - $70 though.

The rooms here are neater and spacious compared to Petain Road. Most of it comes with huge mirrors (on the ceiling too). The brothel is open daily from early noon to late evening. As the 2 brothels are located just beside the famous coffeeshop, the area is extremely packed during lunch time. This will be a horrible time to visit unless you would like to invite disgusting stares.

Conclusion
This area has been undergoing rapid urbanization and at the rate the brothels are disappearing, it is hard to tell if the last two surviving brothels can even survive 2013. Keong Saik Road would then be a place that was once classified as a red-light district. With the iconic Pinnacle@Duxton just walking distance away from this area, and the authorities keen to develop the area as a pro family area, we shall just have wait and see a day at a time.
